As many of you have heard, former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms died on Friday, July 4 at the age of 86. Sen. Helms represented North Carolina for thirty years in the U.S. Senate, longer than any previous U.S. Senator from our state.
Sen. Helms was a unique figure. He had many supporters, but he also had many people that did not like where he stood on the issues. But Sen. Helms never wavered from what he thought was right. You always knew where Helms stood, whether or not you agreed with that position was a different story.
Sen. Helms was dubbed "Senator No" by his critics. Instead of being demagoged by this, Helms proudly embraced the "Senator No" label and continued to fight for what he thought was right for North Carolina and the nation.
While I never got to cast a vote for Sen. Helms, I will always remember him for proudly representing North Carolina and fighting for what he thought was right.
I believe we need more politicians to stand up and say no to things they do not believe in. Today, we have too many politicians that bend and break to the special interests and don't fight for what they believe is right.
Like him or not, Sen. Helms was a great North Carolinian. Rest in Peace.
